Assault Update: Jessica Yaniv Simpson and Coulthard Part Ways; Trial Delayed

An application was heard in Surrey Court today to delay Jessica Yaniv Simpson’s trial for allegedly assaulting Keean Bexte.

Yaniv filed this second application to delay their trial because it seems that Andrew Coulthard, Yaniv’s lawyer until now, and Yaniv have parted ways. Yaniv requested an adjournment to accommodate new counsel. While counsel isn’t named, I suspect Yaniv has retained Mo Vayeghan, the same lawyer that represented Miriam Yaniv and Ilana Altmann earlier this week.

Crown counsel did oppose this delay but the Court granted it. Realistically, not granting it would have opened the door to appeals and theatrics later so this was probably the best choice.

It’s unclear why Yaniv and Coulthard parted ways. Did Coulthard, who was retained via Legal Aid BC quit? Or did the Yaniv clan borrow against one of their condos and retain the services of Mo Vayeghan, a prominent lawyer and former Crown prosecutor.

An appearance is scheduled for August 18, 2021 to set a new date for trial. Yaniv is facing one charge of assault in this case.
